Small is Beautiful is one of three Landscape Recovery projects on the Duchy of Cornwall estate, on the Isles of Scilly.
The project is farmer and community led, in partnership with Duchy of Cornwall, Isles of Scilly Farmers & Growers, IoS Wildlife Trust and Tresco Island Limited.
The project’s vision is for an intricate landscape distinct by its small scale, but rich in wildlife; with thriving communities, enterprises and farms supporting productive flower and insect rich habitats.
The project will:
-
Protect, extend and enhance flower rich and woody habitats by 150 hectares.
-
Secure favourable conservation status for protected sites (266 hectares).
-
Improve soil health via regenerative grazing across 500 ha of farmland and provision of a small-scale abattoir
-
Safeguard the Isles from emerging biosecurity risks (Dutch elm disease, rats, varroa)

David Mawer
Project Officer
As Senior Conservation Warden with the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust for 17 years, David delivered a range of habitat, species, and heritage conservation projects, including a complex higher level stewardship agreement, which covered heathland, maritime grassland, dune, wetland and woodland on the inhabited and uninhabited islands within the Trust’s care.
"As Project Officer for the Small is Beautiful Project I work closely with farmers and land managers to encourage participation, assess and map habitat and heritage features, and produce individual management plans to generate and synthesise a shared vision leading to bespoke management options to be applied over the twenty years of the project."
